Writer for Rent
W4R - The Expert Freelance Copywriter
Becoming an expert in 10,000 hours...
"In study after study of composers, basketball players, fiction writers, ice-skaters, concert pianists, chess players, master criminals," writes the neurologist Daniel Levitin, "this number comes up again and again. Ten thousand hours is equivalent to roughly three hours a day, or 20 hours a week, of practice over 10 years... No one has yet found a case in which true world-class expertise was accomplished in less time. It seems that it takes the brain this long to assimilate all that it needs to know to achieve true mastery." Malcolm Gladwell, The Outliers
Natural talent will only get you so far in life. To become an expert you need to have extensive knowledge and the ability in a particular area, far above that of an average person. You have to put in the work and as Daniel Levitin points out, the prolonged and intense experience that exceeds 10,000 hours.
- I have been an expert copywriter (10,000 hours plus) for quite some time now. And this expertise makes a difference to my clients.
Experts See Things Differently
It appears that when you reach the expert level of your profession everything changes. You know see things differently from how you approach your work (with a sense of easy confidence, no matter how daunting the project) to how your clients think of you (as someone they trust to do right by them).
- Clients notice and they soon realize that the expertise they are hiring with copywriter Writer for Rent is worth every penny because it solves whatever " copy writing problem" they need solved. Truly expert professional freelance copywriters are rare.
Professional Copywriter since 1984
I've been a professional, freelance copywriter since 1984 when I sold my first story to newspaper for $25, while still in journalism school. I have worked for city daily newspapers, where I learned more about people than a degree in psychology would have ever given me. I also learned that writing good copy means telling a good story.
- Sometimes great stories are three words long (billboards) and other times it's a book (ghostwritten).
I have worked in public relations and learned some new things. Most often I wrote copy for ad agencies and custom-content firms. It's in those places where I earned my chops; that copywriting was more than just natural flair for writing, it was proven creative talent melded with an understanding of what makes people buy. And what doesn't.
Best Speech Ever Written
This curiosity has led me to write compelling copy for a multitude of clients and their customers over the years.
I have written copy about UFC fighting as well as theoretical physics and everything in between. I've written about adventure racing and plastics extrusion. I have construction company clients and international financial services firms that call upon me regularly for copywriting. I write copy for gum companies, municipal government, hair product manufacturers and running shoe manufacturers (love the Swoosh). I write about boxing and fitness, death insurance (it's not what you think it is) and I write speeches about love, politics, pizza and drugs. (Not usually all at once.) I write direct mail letters, packaging copy and corporate materials. I've written obituaries, love letters and video game scripts.
I think that St. Crispen's Day Speech (Henry V) is the root of all inspirational speeches and if you need a leadership pick-me-up, I urge you to read it.
The Copywriter that Never Misses a Deadline
I write web copy all the time because that's the way the world communicates and I am skilled in website usability issues and information architecture. I also write for print, television and radio. All kinds of business writing. I don' blog because I don't want to, but I help my clients with blog writing if it works for them. I don't hang out with writers or designers or creative directors, but I work with them every day and they appreciate the fact I am a professional they can count on. I have never missed a deadline since 1968 (my kindergarten teachers were strict) and the rest I attribute to my German heritage and desire to provide superior customer service.
